Innovation, inspired by racing, and Porsche are synonymous. The first turbo car at Le Mans was a Porsche in 1974, with the first turbo victory coming in 1976. The first four-wheel drive race car was a Porsche in 1986. With the 12-cylinder 917 in the early 70’s and the 956/962’s from the mid 80’s to the mid 90s, Porsche was an early pioneer in the use of down force and aerodynamics to harness massive horsepower and light weight. After a 16-year absence, Porsche entered Le Mans in 2015 with the 919, the most advanced hybrid racer ever, and won the overall victory three years in a row. Just recently retired from racing, a factory-enhanced 919 has just shattered the lap time record at Germany’s Nurburgring “Nordschleife” by almost 60 seconds, which was previously held by a Porsche 956C for 35 years.
