Special Feature Car

Replica of Herbie, the star character of Walk Disney’s 1968 movie, “The Love Bug.” Originally a California car, this sliding-sunroof 1963 Beetle was given some visual and mechanical modifications by its previous and current owners, giving performance commensurate with Herbie’s good looks! This car wears Herbie’s OFP857 California license plates, blue/white/red stripes and the number 53 on the gumballs. The car has a 1915cc engine with twin Weber 40mm carburetors squeezed under it’s engine bonnet, a freeway flyer transmission, an auxiliary oil filter and cooler, a low-restriction header exhaust, and widened wheels.

Walt Disney selected the Volkswagen for his movie by lining up various cars of the era at the studio entrance. Passersby were invariably drawn to the Volkswagen, so Walt chose the bug to star in his movie. He selected the number 53 as an homage to baseball player Don Drysdale, who wore the number as a player for the Los Angeles Dodgers. “The Love Bug” inspired several sequels and a television series, and there is a Herbie on display at a Love Bug themed hotel at Walt Disney World.
